AMEA Power Signs Agreements to Develop Africa’s Largest Solar PV and First Utility-Scale BESS in Egypt

Source:,solarquarter

AMEA Power, a leading renewable energy company, has signed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to develop Africa’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant and Egypt’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). The agreements were signed with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company during a ceremony attended by Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and other high-level officials.

The agreements pave the way for two major renewable energy projects in Egypt. The first project involves the construction of a 1,000MW solar PV plant and a 600MWh BESS in the Benban area of Aswan Governorate. This will become the largest solar PV and BESS project on the African continent. The second project is a 300MWh BESS expansion at AMEA Power’s 500MW Abydos Solar PV power plant, which is currently under construction in Kom Ombo, Aswan Governorate.

AMEA Power’s Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, stated, “Our projects set a new benchmark for renewable energy in Egypt and across Africa. They are catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and community empowerment, reinforcing our commitment to supporting Egypt’s clean energy transition.”

The combined investment for both projects amounts to USD 800 million. Once operational, the projects are expected to generate clean energy for over 769,800 homes and reduce carbon emissions by more than 2.3 million tons annually. These initiatives will also create approximately 2,500 jobs during peak construction.

AMEA Power continues to expand its renewable energy footprint in Egypt. In addition to these projects, the company is developing the 500MW Amunet Wind Project, scheduled for completion by Q3 2025. The 500MW Abydos Solar PV Project, along with a 300MWh BESS, is expected to be commissioned by October 2024.

The projects will help Egypt meet its clean energy goals and address power shortages, contributing to the country’s energy diversification and sustainability efforts. AMEA Power is also committed to social initiatives through its Community Investment and Development Programs aimed at supporting local communities.

Key attendees at the PPA signing ceremony included:

  • H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt
  • H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy
  • H.E. Mariam Al Kaabi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt
  • Mr. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman, AMEA Power
  • Senior leadership from AMEA Power, including Aqueel Bohra, Samir Nacef, Tina Blazquez-Lopez, Khaled Arfien, and Ahmed Hafez
