His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, attended the signing ceremony where ADNOC announced its acquisition of a 35% equity stake in ExxonMobil’s (NYSE: XOM) proposed low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Baytown, Texas.

The event, held in Abu Dhabi, included key executives from both companies, including ADNOC CEO H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber and ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO Darren Woods. This strategic partnership marks a significant investment in U.S. energy production and aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. The facility is expected to play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in sectors such as industry, energy, and transportation, while meeting growing demand for lower-carbon fuels.

The proposed facility, pending government policy support and regulatory permits, aims to become the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen plant upon its startup. It is expected to produce up to 1 billion cubic feet of low-carbon hydrogen per day, capturing 98% of CO2 emissions, and generate over 1 million tons of low-carbon ammonia annually. The final investment decision (FID) is expected in 2025, with the plant operational by 2029.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber stated, “This strategic investment is a significant step in ADNOC’s efforts to diversify its portfolio and accelerate international growth in low-carbon energy.” The facility will utilize advanced carbon capture technology to minimize emissions, bringing substantial economic and social benefits to Baytown, Texas, and surrounding communities.

Darren Woods added, “This partnership with ADNOC strengthens our ability to scale this world-class project, benefiting both the environment and local communities.”

In line with its sustainability goals, ADNOC plans to support local community initiatives in Baytown, further demonstrating its commitment to fostering economic and social development in the regions it operates.
